GODIGITAL AND UPLINK NAB AWARD-WINNING SMOLOWITZ
DOCUMENTARY “THE POWER OF TWO”
GODIGITAL TO RELEASE IN USA, JUNE 5TH;
UPLINK TO RELEASE IN JAPAN, OCTOBER 2012
LOS ANGELES– (March 5, 2012) Twin Triumph Productions, LLC, and Kevin Iwashina’s Preferred Content are pleased to announce two key acquisitions of THE POWER OF TWO in both the USA and Japan markets.
Directed by Academy Award nominated producer Marc Smolowitz, THE POWER OF TWO world premiered last August at DocuWeeks 2011, and has since won 8 audience awards and best documentary prizes, having screened at over 20 festivals around the world.
In the USA, the title will be released extensively on Cable/Satellite VOD and digital broadband by GoDigital on Tuesday, June 5th, following a limited theatrical and national community screenings release through April and May. In Japan, it will be released theatrically nationwide by Uplink, which has obtained all rights to the film in that country.
Inspired by the 2007 memoir co-authored by half-Japanese twins Anabel (Ana) Stenzel and Isabel (Isa) Stenzel Byrnes, THE POWER OF TWO chronicles their battle with the fatal genetic disease cystic fibrosis and their miraculous survivals through double lung transplants, emerging as global advocates for organ donation awareness. Notably, the film follows Ana and Isa on an advocacy tour to Japan, where Smolowitz explores why organ donation remains so rare and controversial in that nation.
THE POWER OF TWO is the feature directorial debut of Smolowitz (“The Weather Underground,” 2003; “Trembling Before G-d”, 2001), who produced the film with Andrew Byrnes, a partner at Covington & Burling LLP. Chris Kelly, a Silicon Valley attorney and the first Chief Privacy Officer of Facebook, executive produced.
“It truly has been an honor to make this film — a highlight of my life and career,” Smolowitz says in reference to the impact his film is already having on audiences around the world. He added, “In bringing the story of Ana and Isa to the screen, I have learned so much about what it means to opt in for being an advocate for something bigger than myself.”
On this recent acquisition, Logan Mulvey, CEO of GoDigital, said, “THE POWER OF TWO is one of the first specialty feature docs being released by GoDigital, following the company’s recent acquisition of Might Entertainment. We’re committed to developing the VOD and digital platform audience of high-quality, high-impact social issue films like those being produced by award winning filmmakers like Marc Smolowitz.”
In Japan, THE POWER OF TWO had its international premiere last October at the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival, where Takashi Asai, Founder of Uplink, saw the film and made an offer to distribute this unique USA title with Japanese resonance. He said, “It is very important that Japanese audiences are exposed to the issues and stories that are so beautifully profiled in Smolowitz’s film. To that goal, we’re planning a national commercial release of THE POWER OF TWO in Japan in October 2012, with every effort being made to use the film to create more public awareness of organ donation.”
